We were asked to deliver a high‑accuracy level indication and pump control system for six above‑ground fuel storage tanks, each holding 150,000 litres of AVTUR aviation fuel. Alongside precise level monitoring, the system also needed to provide independent protection for the site’s fuel transfer pumps, preventing dry‑running and ensuring safe shutdown in emergency situations.
To deliver this, we built the solution around OPW 924b magnetostrictive ATEX level probes, providing continuous, reliable level measurement across all six tanks. This data is presented through an OPW iSite touchscreen HMI, giving operators clear visibility of fuel levels, ullage, alarms, deliveries and static leak detection. The system was designed to give operators everything they need in one place, including:
- Display of all fuel levels and ullage
- Alarm status for level and leak conditions
- Delivery monitoring
- Static leak detection
- Wireless transmission of level and alarm data to the base fuel management system
- ATEX‑certified inputs from all level probes
Fuel level information is accessible via a secure web‑based browser using the site’s wireless network, and all level and alarm data is fed directly into the base fuel management system for centralised oversight.
A key part of the installation was independent pump protection. Fuel transfer pumps are monitored and controlled using Afriso DMU 03 ATEX pressure transmitters, linked to a Simex programmable touchscreen controller. This setup provides automatic pump shutdown in emergency situations and prevents dry‑running, adding a vital layer of operational safety.
The completed system gives the client a robust, integrated monitoring and pump control solution that improves operator awareness, enhances safety and ensures reliable communication with the wider fuel management infrastructure — all delivered as a turnkey package tailored to high‑capacity aviation fuel storage.
