The client required two turnkey, high‑accuracy level indication and environmental monitoring systems for a fuel installation consisting of four NATO‑standard bulk storage tanks, each holding 1.25 million litres of AVTUR aviation fuel. The brief called for precise level measurement, reliable alarm signalling and full integration with both the base fuel management system and the site’s emergency services.
To achieve this, we designed the system around OPW AST flexible magnetostrictive ATEX level probes, providing continuous, high‑accuracy level data for all tanks. This information is displayed through an OPW iSite touchscreen HMI, giving operators clear visibility of fuel levels, ullage, alarms, deliveries and a dedicated 100‑litre fuel loss alarm. The system was engineered to provide all essential functionality in one place, including:
- Display of all fuel levels and ullage
- Alarm status for level and environmental conditions
- Delivery monitoring
- 100‑litre fuel loss alarm
- Wireless and landline data transmission to the base fuel management system
- ATEX‑certified inputs from all level probes
Level and alarm data are transmitted via both telephone landline and wireless network, ensuring operators can access fuel information through a secure web‑based browser. To support emergency response, secondary level and environmental alarms are also sent via GSM modem directly to base police and fire services.
Environmental protection formed a key part of the installation. Afriso OSA ATEX oil separator alarms were used to monitor separator levels, while Afriso S71X ATEX level switches provided high‑level alarm detection within the tanks. Across the wider site, Intellismart environmental sensors were installed at strategic points to detect any signs of fuel leakage, offering early warning and enhanced safety.
The completed systems give the client a robust, integrated monitoring solution that improves operational visibility, strengthens environmental protection and ensures critical alarms reach both fuel management teams and emergency services without delay — all delivered as a turnkey package tailored to high‑capacity aviation fuel storage.
