How Tank Alarms Work
A tank alarm is a simple but essential safety device used to prevent overfilling, protect pumps and ensure environmental compliance. Whether you’re storing water, fuel or chemicals, a reliable alarm system helps operators respond quickly to changing tank conditions.
Tank alarms typically monitor one or more set points inside the tank. A high‑level alarm warns when the tank is nearly full, helping to prevent spills or overfilling. A low‑level alarm alerts operators when the tank is running low, protecting pumps from running dry or shutting down unexpectedly. A bund alarm detects liquid inside the bund, indicating a leak or breach that needs attention.

Different sensing technologies can be used depending on the application. Float switches provide a simple mechanical method of detecting liquid at a specific height. Conductivity probes work well with water and other conductive liquids. Ultrasonic sensors offer non‑contact detection, while pressure‑based systems are suitable for deeper tanks or more complex installations.
When an alarm condition is triggered, the system may activate a sounder, beacon or relay output. Some alarms can also integrate with building management systems or send remote notifications.
Correct installation is key to reliable operation. Sensors must be mounted at the right height, enclosures must be suitable for the environment and fuel tanks may require ATEX‑rated equipment. When installed properly, a tank alarm provides dependable protection for any storage system.
